Middle Image of 3 across top of page shows a photo of Velvette, an African American woman, sitting at a desk and looking at a laptop. She is wearing a grey top and a yellow scarf
first Image of 3 across top of page shows a glass wipe board with multi-colored postits clustered into groups. There are circles around some clusters with the theme descriptor written on the board
The last image of 3 across the top of the page is a zoomed in view of a Miro board (digital wipe board) on the screen of a laptop

I help organizations understand the people who matter most to them: their customers, their employees, their community. Then I facilitate the co-design process where your team innovates on solutions, together.

This is where I come in. I sit down with that audience and find out how they're feeling and what their current needs are, then facilitate a working session where your team uses their feedback to innovate and plan for what comes next.

When was the last time you heard from the people you're making decisions about?

How are they feeling? What do they need? What's working for them, currently? What isn't? What would make them more motivated and fulfilled?

You probably carry a mental picture of your audience in your head. How recently has it been checked?

3 audiences + 1 practice

Your community

What do the people you serve need next? Bring them into the room to innovate and plan for the future together.

Your customers

Who are they now? What do they need from you? How is your message landing with them? I can capture and synthesize that data for you.

Your employees

What's working for them? What's quietly wearing them down? What would help them feel motivated and fulfilled? I provide the aggregated data and then help your team design what to do about it.

Whichever audience it is, the process is the same. I do the research. Then I facilitate a working session where your team shapes it into a ranked plan they own.

Who do you most need to understand right now?

Activate

I facilitate a hands-on co-design workshop, using my Creative Surfacing process, where your team works through findings and shapes what's next

4.

Frame

Together, we identify and prioritize what matters most in order to design a future state

3.

Synthesize

I sort what I hear into clear themes and present it in a format you can act on

2.

Discover

I sit down with the people who matter to you and find out what they need, what's working and not working

1.

From there, your team builds, implements, and owns the plan. To measure successes and close gaps, bring me back in to capture + analyze another round of feedback.

Creative Surfacing

I care equally about how a room feels and how the research holds up.
Sessions where the quiet participants get to speak and nobody has to perform. Built for how different brains work, because being inclusive and accessible is critical. No jargon, no masking, and plenty of room to think, play, and explore.

How I work

Who I work with

Values-led organizations: B Corps, benefit corps, employee-owned companies, mission-driven brands. Big enough to have real teams. Small enough that the founders still care what happens on the floor.
If you lead with curiosity and empathy, we should work together!

The Berwick Civic Association brought their community together to design their upcoming Centennial year, resulting in a full year of programming the community is excited about.

I'm Velvette De Laney.
After 20 years as a Graphic Designer, and then nine years leading user experience and employee-experience research for both local and Fortune 100 companies (with an MFA in Design Research in between), I'm excited to present my own lab bringing Design Research and co-design workshop facilitation to values-driven companies! I'm based in Columbus and work everywhere, in person and remote.
